Surviving Supermarket Shopping With Your Children

ByHeather A Wood

Anyone with children knows all too well how difficult it can be going supermarket shopping with their dearly beloved little ones. There are so many exciting goodies leaping out at the children. There are colourful packages, cartoon characters splashed across boxes, yummy treats and numerous other things especially designed to lure the children in and get them to pester you into purchasing something for them.

The followingtips may help you overcome the chore of supermarket shopping with children. These tips will help you to navigate the aisles in peace and keep your children from throwing those nasty embarrassing tantrums.

1.Avoid the Chocolate Checkouts

When ready to leave, choose a checkout that doesn't have chocolate bars totally surrounding your children. Many supermarkets now provide confectionary free checkouts. This will allow you to make a peaceful exit from the supermarket without being nagged and nagged to buy something.

2.Feed Your Child Before You Go Out

Your child is less likely to pester you for treats if you have given them something nourishing to eat before you hit the shops. If you haven't bothered to feed them, then it is going to be much harder to say no when you know they are very hungry. They always say as an adult to 'never go shopping hungry', so remember that motto for your children also. If you haven't had time to give them a feed beforehand, maybe duck into the supermarket, grab them something they can quickly eat (banana, mandarin, muesli bar, sultanas etc) and feed that to them before going back in to do your big shop.

3.Let Them Pick a Healthy Treat

Give your child the option of picking a healthy treat for themselves that they can eat either that day or later in the week. Give them the choice of some of their favourite fruits, yoghurts, muesli bars, flavoured milks etc. Everyone deserves a treat but this way you are ensuring you can give the treat to them when you want to give it to them, and that it is healthy for them.

4.Use the Trolley Seat

Whilst your children are young, use the seat in the trolley to transport them around. That way they can't run off on their own and start grabbing all sorts of things from the shelves. Alternatively encourage your children to stand beside the trolley as you shop and don't allow them to run up and down the aisles on their own.

5.Play Games Whilst Shopping

Play an alphabet or number game whilst shopping. Teach your little children by showing them items that begin with certain letters or prices that have certain numbers in them. Or if your child is older, get them to look out for items that start with certain letters or prices that have certain numbers in them. That way their attention is not focused on looking out for treats for themselves and hopefully they will miss the bright packaging with their favourite cartoon character on it.

6.Get Your Children To Help You

Involve older children in helping you to shop. Get them to help you to find certain items or to compare prices of different products to ensure you get value for your money. Again, the children will be focusing on finding something specific on the shelf and looking out for items on special instead of worrying about how they can entice you to buy something they want.

7.Let Your Children Make Selections

Let your children select the pieces of fruit and vegetables you are going to buy. By involving them in your purchases they are going to be more acceptable of these produce items when you present them for eating.

8.Avoid Bad Aisles

There are easily a couple of aisles in each supermarket that you can avoid if you are encouraging healthy eating at home. These can be aisles that contain chocolates, lollies, soft drinks, biscuits, potato chips etc. By totally avoiding these sorts of aisles, you will save yourself a lot of pain.

We hope these shopping tips will help you next time you have to go to the supermarket and that you can save yourself some money by not being lured into the demands of your little ones.
